La extrema pobreza es un fenómeno universal y multidimensional que afecta a millones de personas tanto en los países ricos como pobres4. Conforme a la Organización Mundial de la Salud, un billón de personas viven en extrema pobreza con un dólar al día y 270 millones de personas, la mayoría de ellas mujeres y niños, murieron como resultado de la pobreza desde 1990. Esta situación es incompatible con la dignidad humana y autoestima de los pobres.
